Stairs are an essential part of any home (unless it’s a bungalow of course), but they don’t just have to have the sole function of letting you traverse from one floor of your house to the next. So here we’ve brought you five staircase design ideas that will give you an extra bit of functionality for your home.
Add an extra bit of storage space
Staircases often take up a fair amount of space in our homes, so why not take a slightly more creative direction with your new staircase design by enriching your home with more storage space. There are a couple ways you could do this depending on the style of stairs you want. If your staircase features solid risers, then why not make the most of that riser space and create hinged storage holes within your staircase. Or perhaps you’d prefer to add storage using a one wall staircase design, allowing you to fit shelving or under stair cupboards and draws.
Make an extra room
Most of us are all familiar with the Harry Potter books and Harry’s cramped ‘under the stairs’ bedroom, but with a little bit of creative design, you could create that perfect extra room for your home, through your staircase design.
Now depending on the size of your staircase you might be able to add that office space you’ve always dreamt of, or maybe you want to give your kids a secret playroom. But if you’re strapped for room then why not give that loving pooch or feline in your house a safe little hidey-hole to snuggle down in on those cold winter nights.
An open space
Maybe you simply want to add that little extra open space to your home, keeping with the clean, open plan architecture of the rest of your house. Well, why not build a staircase with open risers and no stringers on either side. This would give you a clean-cut design as well as opening your living space that otherwise would have been taken up by solid risers and the rest of your staircase’s design.
Get that library you’ve always wanted
Are you a major bookworm? Have you always dreamt of having your own library? Then why not make the most of your staircase design and build plenty of bookshelves into the design of your staircase providing a suitable home for your reading archive. Place a comfy chair and lamp underneath the highest point of your stairs and put the fire on and you’ll never want to move again from your bespoke little library.
